How to Identify an Unknown Charge

The fastest way to identify a charge is to match the descriptor, amount, date, and likely merchant ecosystem before assuming fraud.

1. Start with the descriptor exactly as shown

Copy the charge text exactly. Small differences matter because abbreviations, symbols, and processor prefixes often reveal the merchant family.

2. Check recurring services and shared accounts

Many “unknown” charges are recurring subscriptions or purchases made by another person using the same card. Review subscriptions, archived orders, and household activity first.

3. Match the amount and date

The descriptor alone is not enough. Look for a receipt, app renewal, digital purchase, or transfer that matches both the amount and posting date.

4. Escalate only after checking the merchant path

If the charge still makes no sense, contact the merchant or payment provider first where possible. Then contact your bank if the transaction appears unauthorized.
